On the 2nd of August 2021, Lifeline recorded its busiest day ever, 3,345 calls were made as Australian’s were currently struggling with the recent lockdowns.
This is not only alarming, but also reassuring to see that people are reaching out to seek help. I have been advised by medical professions that most psychologist have a waiting time of 12 months. This means patients need to wait for 12 months before they can be seen by a psychologist.
During the last couple of months, I have noticed a high up-turn in symptoms of anxiety being presented with calls for seeking help related to stress, fear and overwhelm.
Anxiety can materialise in many guises, from anxiety surrounding a particular issue or “one off” event, through to generalised anxiety, where the client may not have any awareness of why they are even anxious. Anxiety that is escalated from over too much worry.
Worry is what happens when your mind dwells on negative thoughts, uncertain outcomes or things that could go wrong. Worry tends to be those repetitive, obsessive thoughts. Melanie Greenberg, a clinical psychologist in Mill Valley, USA described it as: “The cognitive component of anxiety.” Simply put – worry happens only in your mind, not in your body. Worry is helpful only if it leads to change – not if it turns into obsessive thoughts that can lead to anxiety.

Benefits to Online Group Therapy
You are not alone – Working in a group with others who are experiencing from the same issue removes the feeling of isolation.
Connection – Connection may be limited for many people who suffer from anxiety and this can lead to sadness or frustration as a result.
Opportunity for growth – Group therapy teaches you more about who you are as a person. Individuals are encouraged to talk about their presenting concerns. Opening up about such matters is an incredibly powerful and liberating experience. This allows individuals to accept and observe what they are experiencing and find the best way to deal with it.
Access to a complete support system – This is not about offering support to one person at a time. It is more about each individual encouraging each other to provide feedback and support to others, allowing everyone to connect with each other. Sharing between the group is a healthy way to provide hope and inspiration for all involved.
Cost effective – Group therapy tend to be less costly than one-on-one sessions. However, this does not mean it is less effective in treating anxiety related symptoms. Group therapy sessions with qualified practitioners has proven to significantly improve a person’s mental well-being and quality of life.
